DBSA Albuquerque’s “Laugh It Off” Community Education Program – Our Chapter closes off Mental Health Month on a Laughable High Note

DBSA Albuquerque “Laugh It Off” stand up comics performed at the Turquoise Lodge Hospital in Albuquerque on May 31, which is the perfect way to close off May and Mental Health Month here in New Mexico. It’s also the perfect way to introduce DBSA Albuquerque’s “Laugh It Off” comedy education program to the Albuquerque communities.

Comics Marion Crouse, Dennis Gray, and Steve Bringe delivered moderately amusing jokes about their own life experiences, highlighting that even the most traumatic events in our recovery journeys can be pretty darned hilarious when told in the proper way.

The folks in the audience responded incredibly positively to our comics’ comedy sets, and what’s great is that the audience asked a ton of truly superb questions about many of the same topics we talk about in Monday and Thursday Support Groups, as well as talking to each other and learning that there are things common to our life experiences and that we’re not all alone in recovery and wellness. The importance of peer connection and power of peer support is integral to DBSA Albuquerque “Laugh It Off” comedy education program.

DBSA Albuquerque thanks Jackie West from Turquoise Lodge Hospital for the invitation, and we hope to continue offering our brand new “Laugh It Off” community education program at Turquoise Lodge.

Stay tuned… our comics are poised to tell their life story/jokes many places around Albuquerque throughout June. Join our DBSA Beacon newsletter for the latest scheduling for our comedy gig. This is an excellent way to learn more about mental health from peers who are excited to tell you about through the magic of humor.

We are recruiting new peer comics for “Laugh It Off”. If you would like more information about the “Laugh It Off” education program, how to get involved, and how you can bring our comics to your community, please contact Steve Bringe at:

Retiring the DBSA Albuquerque “Zia” logo – Saying farewell to an old friend (Photo)

After many years of being the identifying logo for the DBSA Albuquerque chapter, the “Turquoise Trail Zia Logo” is being permanently retired.

We are exceptionally thrilled to introduce our new official chapter logo provided by DBSA National!

The “Zia” logo was designed by a DBSA Albuquerque board member many many many years ago to help align our chapter with the rich New Mexico culture as a way of “branding” our chapter with a recognizable local symbol. In New Mexico, our vast peer communities came to know DBSA Albuquerque by this logo.

DBSA as an international organization of over 700 affiliated chapters brings together peers, families and friends under the common ideal “We’ve been there. We can help.” Peer support in understanding and solidarity is essential, and that includes DBSA Albuquerque being recognized as part of the wonderful extended family of DBSA chapters.

DBSA Albuquerque, in cooperation with DBSA National, is opting to use the DBSA Albuquerque logo provided to help New Mexico peers feel as if they are part of our larger world community, that our challenges and triumphs are shared with peers beyond our state borders.

So, while many of our most cherished longtime members shed a few tears over our chapter’s decision, we are officially retiring the DBSA Albuquerque “Zia” logo.

Of course, DBSA Albuquerque is not a graphic symbol, it is a community of peers. Our strength is being a community of peers who share with each other and care for each other.

Thank you, “Zia” logo! You have served us well!

Welcome to the new DBSA Albuquerque website: Let us know what would be useful for you

Hello, Albuquerque communities!

After a few month hiatus, our chapter website is back on the interweb for you.

As we continue to develop our website, we would love your input on what you would find useful from a top-ranking behavioral health website in our New Mexico communities. With a privileged Google, Yahoo, and Bing ranking, it’s a good idea for our chapter to have features and information that are most useful to you right here.

Here are a few things that are in development and should be available in the coming week:

– Site calendar integrated with our Facebook, Twitter, Google+, & email list
– phpBB forum
– Finally finally finally updating our email list
– Behavioral health resources
– Adding printable literature to our “Brochures” page
– Featured peers page… I have no idea what to call this page… essentially, if you have anything you’d like posted to our site, please send it along. Personal stories of living with a mental illness, your art, your music, an upcoming event you’re organizing as just a few examples.
– Mobile version of the website

Please email any suggestions or hints you might have to:

Thanks much!
